Special Feature
2003 St. Jude Children's Research Hospital Commemorative Ornament: A Christmas tree ornament, die cut and engraved in brass, honoring founder Danny Thomas. On behalf of the hospital, the client asked me if it was possible to make portraits from etched brass. Using the photograph shown below, I made a black and white drawing in Adobe Illustrator. A colorized rendering was made for the client and the hospital [committee] to aid visualizing the finished product. The black line represents the die cut and the lighter color indicates which areas would be etched. Due to budget constraints, the die cut shape was changed by the overseas vendor. The heart shape at the top and the year banner at the bottom were removed. Also, due to a misunderstanding, the word 'etching' turned out to be the word 'engraving.' Unable to provide an etching process, the line art was again changed by the vendor. The end result is shown below. It's loosely 'inspired' my original vector drawing. Return to Projects.
